Can I drive my forklift truck on public roads?
In order to drive your forklift truck on a public road, you must have the appropriate registration, tax, and insurance. However, if you are travelling less than 1000 yards, different rules apply.
If you’re planning to travel along or operate your forklift on a public road, you must adhere to the following requirements (in accordance with the Vehicle Excise and Registration Act 1994):
The requirements change slightly when you are travelling less than 1000 yards on a public road. In this case, your vehicle will be classed as a “work truck” and will be exempt from the Road Vehicles Regulations. Your vehicle will still require more standard licencing according to the weight of the lift truck and how it is propelled.
In both cases, however, you will also need to have a full UK driver’s license and formal training.
